An Autumnal Feel...

It's such a beautiful feeling, to be wrapped, warm under the covers but oblivious to the brief world that shows it's self occasionally this time of year. Outside a crisp autumn fog is slowly burnt off by a soft but persistent sun, to reveal a world that sparkles in the wind, spider's webs transformed into strands of pearls and leaves glisten saturated with dew; so I decided to drag myself out and see what I could see...

As it was an early start, we decided to travel a little further afield and give Leighton a visit. On arrival things didn't look to promising, no sighting logged in, no signs of the 2 Great White Egrets that have be hanging around for about 2 week now, it was cold damp and the sun that they had promised, showed no sign of show its self.

In the first hide 1 eclipse male Pintail, Buzzard but generally quite quiet, in the second things seemed to be heading the same way, Gadwall, Teal, Mallard, Heron and a single Snipe we had just decided to leave and find somewhere to eat when the heavens opened, so we decided to stay; this proved to be one of our better decisions, within 5 minutes a Bitten came flying a cross, quite distant but nice to see all the less,

following this within seconds, in flew a large egret, and it was the one we were hoping for, the Great White Egret it drifted in and landed a the far side of the pool, the 3rd that I have seen this year but by far the best views as of yet.

After watching this magnificent bird for just under an hour, we headed off to Allen's hide to see what was around, on the way we came across a very friendly little Robin sat feeding on a near by fence,

When we reach the hide, there was quite a bit going on, Greenshank, Redshank, dunlin, massive numbers of Black Tailed Godwit a count of 1005 with 1 Bar tailed Godwit mixed it numerous little egrets and a very co-operative Heron, such a majestic bird when seen soaring across the waters so effortlessly,

but slightly less agile when coming into land...

Last but not least, this Redshank such a cracking little bird and so readily overlooked,

Experimental.....

I had a few hours over at Marshide today, such a fabulous day, butterflies everywhere, White throats sings and newly hatch chicks all over the place, in front of Sandgroungers, there was a family of baby Shellduck, soon after a very Young Pipit appeared, and Mallard ducklings came into sight, such a cute start to the morning. soon after, a Redshank came and landed close to the hide so I decided to try and experiment with some video to see how it would turn out.

I like to think not bad for my first ever attempt...

Appart from these there was nothing around, a few Black Headed gulls but thats was it so I heade down to nells hide, the water was low and birds were every where, such a nice sight to be welcomed by, as a scanned around, all the usuals were present and 2 Curlew Sandpipers which were very nice to see as one was almost in hull summer plumage, apart from these 2 beauties, there wasn't much around, Dunlin mouching around, Ring Plover making a rachet and all the others that you might expect...

As I was watching everything takeplace, I started to take a few shots of the shellducks dotted around, when I saw one stray to close to an Avocets nest and a small battle took place...

In this pic it looks like the avocet lost but trust me the shellduck soon left...

Happy Easter Everyone...

Easter bank holiday and the motorways were at a stand still, so we ditched our plans to go to Leighton Moss and headed down to the local turf instead so we spent a day down at Marshside and Mere Sands Wood. It was a fantastic day in between all the rain showers, all the usual birds knocking around and a few new ones, Willow Warblers singing all the way down Marine Drive, Blackcaps singing at Mere Sands and Redpoll flitting around, 5 House Martin over Nell's hide and numerous Swallows, no sign of the little stint but a single 2nd winter Med. Gull made up for the loss and a number of Ruff feeding close to the road.

Day Light Saving & Sunset to Die for.

On Wednesday I Spent day at Martin Mere, went to buy my Dad a new scope, once all that was over we had an hour walking around, the Marsh Harrier was showing very well and a heron fishing in a near by pool before flying off;

Plenty of other birds knocking around, Ringed Plover, Avocet, Blackwit, Oyster Catcher, Lapwing, Redshank and all the wildfoul and smaller birds that you might expect.

After Tea I decided to have a ride down to Marshide, parking up at Crossens and walking down to the sand plant, such a beautiful evening, I managed to see three Short Eared owls, Which two were relativly close and a merlin weaving around across the marsh.

The Pics arn't that great but here's one the of the Short Eared owls i picked up...

After some fantastic views of the shorty, I was treated to a gorgeouse sunset just before i left...
